Fan Favorite Andrew Heller Coming to Flint for Book Signing

Beloved Flint Journal columnist Andrew Heller is coming to town for a meet and greet and book signing event in October.

(Andy will probably take issue with the word 'beloved,' but whatever.)

Who is Andrew Heller?

Back when catching up on the day's news stories meant your fingers would get covered with black ink (ask your parents), Andy Heller's "Come Heller High Water" column was a must-read in the Flint Journal.

Beyond the front page, Heller offered a fresh take.

As a regular columnist for the paper from 1989 to 2016, Heller sometimes took the week's headlines and expressed what many of us were thinking but may have been afraid to say out loud.

Before the days of Facebook, we also had an opportunity to watch this trusted 'friend's' children grow up. And Andy often treated us with a humorous glimpse into the wide-open world of navigating married life.

Before LOL was a thing, I laughed out loud at a moment Heller shared while his children were young. I forget the details, but Andy's wife - always referenced as "the lovely yet formidable Marcia - had asked him if he wanted his family to freeze. (They were presumably dealing with a broken furnace or thermostat issue.) His response was, "Most of the time, no."

That line stuck with me for decades. Then, while raising a young family in the early 2000s, I was presented with a similar question, and those words just fell out of my mouth. (Good luck collecting royalties.)

My Father's Phone Number:  Easily my favorite column was when Andy shared a story after his father passed away. (It's reprised in his first book 'Come Heller High Water I.') One of the tasks most of us have to deal with after losing a parent is canceling their phone service. It's a seemingly-small task but the essay properly conveyed what a big, emotional undertaking it is.

Heller is the author of three books, 'Come Heller High Water I & II' and 'Saving the World One Column at a Time.'

Totem Books in Flint is hosting a book signing event and meet and greet with Andrew Heller on Saturday, October 12 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. The address is 620 W. Court St. and the event is open to the public. A limited number of Heller's books will be available for sale.

"My goal is just to be casual and chit-chat with anyone willing to come," Heller tells Townsquare Media.

He went on to say there may be an opportunity for questions and answers and quipped that he'll really feel awkward if nobody attends.
