Some Michigan families will see a big boost on their Bridge Cards this August, just in time for back-to-school shopping.

Parents in Michigan who qualify will receive $400 per eligible child added to their Bridge Card as a clothing allowance from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

  • The allowance is down from last year’s $529 per child.

Who’s Eligible for the $400 Clothing Allowance?

The funds will be automatically loaded onto each eligible client’s EBT account. To qualify, households must have an active Family Independence Program (FIP) case as of July 31.

Eligible families should have received a letter from MDHHS during the month of July explaining their eligibility and benefit amount.

How This Year’s Allowance Compares to Last Year

According to WKAR, this year’s $400 clothing allowance per child is down from last year’s stipend of $529.

In 2011, Republican Senator Bruce Caswell proposed limiting the clothing allowance to thrift store purchases. That policy did not take hold, and the benefit has since been paid directly to families through their Bridge Cards.
