Let's see if you agree:  I feel a sense of relief when I swear. Sometimes, certain things just can't be expressed accurately without a choice cuss word or two, right?

If you're still with me, we have proof. According to Psychiatrist.com, swearing can actually lessen the sense of pain in your brain. "Spewing a string of profanities signals an area of the brain known as the amygdala to release adrenaline. This flood of hormones subsequently leads to a soothing, analgesic effect."

Michigan Swears Less

According to a nationwide survey, there's one city here in Michigan that actually comes in way below average - its residents swear less frequently than folks in other areas.

That Michigan city is Detroit. Keep in mind, Preply did the research, surveying residents in just the 30 largest cities in the US, so those of us in Flint, Lansing, Saginaw, Grand Rapids - all of us outside Metro Detroit - didn't get a chance to participate. Damn it!

Who Swears the Most?

According to the data, the average respondent swears 21 times per day. Younger people bring up the average with Gen Z swearing an average of 24 times per day compared to Baby Boomers who are only dropping 10 cuss words each day.

Across the US, residents of Columbus, OH come in at number one, swearing about 36 times per day. Here are the top three.

  1. Columbus, OH - 36
  2. Las Vegas, NV - 30
  3. Jacksonville, FL - 28

Who Swears the Least?

Although the Motor City is low on the list, a few others swear less than Detroiters. Folks in Phoenix, AZ and Portland, OR swear less than anyone else in the US, at about 14 cuss words per day.

Detroit is in a four-way tie with Seattle, Memphis, and Houston at number five, at about 18 swears per day. Here's the rundown:

  2. Boston, MA / Milwaukee, WI - 15
  3. San Jose, CA - 16
  4.  New York, NY / El Paso, TX / Chicago, IL - 17
  5. Detroit, MI / Seattle, WA / Houston, TX / Memphis, TN - 18

Remembering the Grand Opening of AutoWorld in Flint, Michigan

A short-lived Six Flags theme park, AutoWorld was supposed to be a tourist destination in Flint. Sadly, after several starts and stops, AutoWorld was imploded in early 1997. The land is now owned by University of Michigan-Flint and is home to the William S White Building.
