Cockroach Infestation Cancels Halloween for Detroit Neighborhood

There are no treats, only cockroaches in one Detroit neighborhood and it's so bad city officials have canceled Halloween.

Residents of a Wyandotte community were told that trick-or-treating this year would be canceled due to a huge cockroach infestation. According to the Detroit Free Press, the infestation from a vacant home was so bad that it spread to other homes along 20th Street. Over concern, the city council voted to shut down trick-or-treating to "prevent roaches from grabbing on to kids' costumes" and entering other homes.

In a letter posted in a Downriver Facebook group signed by Gregory Mayhew and City Councilman Todd Hanna, officials noted that "It's of no fault of the city". Hanna explained to the Detroit Free Press that the infestation came to light a few weeks ago when the city's waste management picked up a load of garbage crawling with bugs outside a home that has since been vacated.

As a result, the sidewalks will be closed Monday night on a portion of 20th Street. According to reports, the city is putting up human barricades and signs to close the sidewalks on the street from Eureka to Grove from 4 to 8 p.m. including the intersections of Orchard and Pine.

The city is set to begin the extermination of the roaches but notes the entire process will take time.
