Lock the Clock in Michigan: Is it Time to Say Goodbye to Daylight Saving Time?
Soon after the candy is gone and the Halloween costumes are back in the closet, it's time to set your clocks back one hour, as we say goodbye to Daylight Saving Time.
But could Michigan permanently say goodbye to the bi-annual ritual of changing the clocks?
This Sounds Painful
Before we go any further, we have to thank the folks at WNEM-TV 5 in Saginaw for the most magnificent typo of all time. Thanks to the internet, this time change reminder from a few years ago will live on for eternity.
As much as the time change is a huge pain in the a--, this sounds even worse.
Is Daylight Saving Time Getting Canceled Permanently?
You may have heard that Michigan's legislature has considered abolishing the twice-yearly time change, once and for all. Some states in the US have even considered a move to stay on Daylight Saving Time permanently, a move known as "Lock the Clock."
Michigan is one of those states.
Legislators in Lansing took steps in 2021 that would permanently put our state on Daylight Saving Time. The measure was also introduced in 2023, as Senate Bill 168 aimed to permanently put Michigan on 'Spring Forward' time.
The Sunshine Protection Act
You may have heard of the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill introduced into the US House and Senate to establish permanent Daylight Saving Time, putting an end to changing the time each spring and fall.
Unfortunately, the Sunshine Protection Act was introduced into Congress in 2023 and has remained in committee with no recent activity. It has not been to Congress in 2024.
Without approval of the SPA, federal law prohibits individual states from switching to permanent Daylight Saving Time.
Currently, Hawaii and Arizona are the only US states that don't observe Daylight Saving time.
