If you've purchased eggs recently in Michigan, it’s time to double-check your cartons! A  massive recall of eggs sold in several states, including right here in Michigan, has been issued due to a link to a dangerous Salmonella outbreak.

Milo's Poultry Farms LLC,  based in Bonduel, Wisconsin, announced they have begun recalling all eggs branded "Milo’s Poultry Farms" and "Tony’s Fresh Market" over a salmonella outbreak. The eggs involved in the massive recall were sold to stores and restaurants in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

"The recall was initiated after the FDA informed the company that environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria," the FDA said in a press release. "Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. has ceased production and distribution at this time and will undergo appropriate testing and sanitization of farms and processing equipment.'

According to the CDC, as of this article, there have been a total of 65 people from nine states who were sickened by the same strain of salmonella from May 23 through August 10. Most of those becoming ill are from Wisconsin, 42, or Illinois, 11, with the remaining individuals being in Michigan, California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Utah, and Virginia. There have been 2 people who have reported illnesses in Michigan.

What to Do If You Have Recalled Eggs?

Per the CDC, if you have any of the recalled eggs you should do the following:

  • Do not eat any recalled eggs. Throw them away or return them to where you bought them.
  • Wash items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled eggs using hot soapy water or a dishwasher.

Salmonella poses a serious health risk, particularly to children, seniors, and those with compromised immune systems. The CDC recommends that people contact “your healthcare provider if you have any of these severe Salmonella symptoms." Click here for symptoms.
