Heads Up: Michigan AG Warns of Fake Tax Letter – It’s a Scam
As tax season approaches and you work to gather your W2s and other important documents, Michigan's Attorney General is sending out a scam warning.
Scams have become so prevalent lately - I often say it's practically a full-time job staying one step ahead of the crooks who are on a mission to separate us from our hard-earned money.
Fraudulent Tax Letter Targeting Michigan Residents
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is sounding the alarm, warning taxpayers in our state that a fraudulent tax letter is being circulated and that it's definitely not legitimate correspondence from the state of Michigan.

The fraudulent letter claims the recipient has a tax bill that is overdue, and includes instructions to resolve the matter. The letter threatens to seize a taxpayer's property if payment is not made and includes a customer service phone number for the recipient to call.
"The State Of Michigan will seize this property for nonpayment of taxes, penalties, and interest due to the State. During this seizure it will be against the law to enter, dismantle, take possession of or remove anything from your property."
How to Spot a Fake Tax Letter
Michigan AG Dana Nessel tells WILX-TV that the Michigan Department of Treasury only corresponds with taxpayers through official letters that bear the nems of the governor and state treasurer. Legitimate letters will only be sent out on official State of Michigan letterhead.
She goes on to say that Michigan officials will not use aggressive tactics and will work with taxpayers to offer multiples ways to settle overdue taxes.
If you receive a letter and question it's validity, the AG suggests contacting the Michigan Department of Treasury for confirmation.
