Why Flint-Area Residents Will Find This SOS Office Closed – and it Could Cause a Headache
Flint-area residents who rely on one of the region's largest Secretary of State offices for license renewals, vehicle registrations, and other services might soon be in for an unpleasant surprise. The popular location is temporarily shutting its doors for a significant remodeling project.
Mundy Township SOS Office Closing for Two-Week Remodel
The Michigan Secretary of State office at Fenton and Hill Roads in Mundy Township will close this Friday (May 16) for remodeling. The office is expected to be closed for about two weeks, with plans to reopen to the public on Monday, June 2, 2025.
According to ABC-12, the project includes updates to the greeter counter, new dividers, fresh carpeting, and the installation of new plexiglass for added safety.
Expect Delays and Longer Lines
The closure is likely to cause longer lines and delays at nearby Secretary of State offices, including those on Main Street in Davison, 3rd Street in Flint, and Vienna Road in Clio.
For those looking to avoid the wait, several self-service stations are available throughout the area, and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's office notes that many transactions can also be completed online or via mobile devices.
Unfortunately, this project comes at a time when many Michigan residents are scrambling to obtain a Real ID, a process that requires an in-person visit to a Michigan Secretary of State office.
In Michigan, Why Do We Call it the Secretary of State Instead of the DMV?
Ever wondered why Michigan has a Secretary of State office instead of a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) like most other states?
The answer is simple – while the DMV in other states typically handles only vehicle-related services like titles and driver license renewals, Michigan's Secretary of State offices handle a much broader range of services, including business licenses, state IDs, and voter registration.
