To say it was a big deal, would be an understatement, and for those lucky enough to be there, it was history-making.

In a groundbreaking move to inspire and rehabilitate inmates, the Genesee County Jail officially opened its state-of-the-art music studio, with a little help from country rap sensation Jelly Roll. The celebrated artist was on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, bringing his unique blend of music and motivation to the facility.

The project, supported by the UAW and with guidance from the Flint Institute of Music, is just another part of the innovative and cutting-edge programs that set the Genesee County Jail apart. Sheriff Chris Swanson led the event, proudly introducing the new music studio as a beacon of hope and creativity within the jail.

The new music studio is part of a broader effort by the Genesee County Jail to provide rehabilitative programs that go beyond traditional methods. By offering inmates the chance to engage in music production, the facility aims to tap into their creative potential and provide a constructive outlet for self-expression. Jelly Roll himself eluded to the fact the music heals, and can become an outlet for dealing with feelings and even anger.

Deputy Jelly Roll?

Sheffif Swanson then surprised everyone, including Jelly Roll, who stopped in Flint for the special ceremony before heading to Midland for a concert. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as Swanson officially deputized Jelly Roll, marking a symbolic partnership. Swanson swore in the singer with a full oath and presented him with his official badge. "From convict to Deputy", Jelly Roll laughed before taking his oath.

Jelly Roll, known for his raw and heartfelt true-to-life lyrics, didn't just stop at cutting the ribbon. He delivered an impromptu concert of two songs including Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues creating an unforgettable experience for everyone present including the first class of the new music studio.
