Friday February 17th was a cold, typical winter night in Michigan. A 17-year-old soccer player, marching band enthusiast and former swimmer was driving home from his girlfriend's birthday party.

Why was a good Samaritan teen killed in Michigan?

Jack Snyder, a Battle Creek Central High School senior, saw two teens walking in the cold while he was driving home. According to a WZZM TV-13 report, police say he offered two younger teens a ride home. So, Snyder was being a kind human. Hoping to help two kids he didn't know (while still a kid himself) from being out in the cold.

The two boys are 13 and 14 years old. They decided to carjack Snyder. 13 and 14 years old. The victim was shot twice. It happened near Battle Creek Avenue and Capital Avenue SW in Battle Creek (where Nina's Market/Grocery sits on the corner).

How will the 13-and 14-year-old boys be charged?

13 ABC and Battle Creek Police report

  • The 14-year-old boy has been "waived" to adult court. At this time, the preliminary charges include homicide and carjacking -- that could change, of course.
  • The 13-year-old boy's charges include homicide, felony murder first degree and carjacking. It was reported he, with a parent, turned himself in.

How can the community help the Snyder family?

Jack Snyder's family & friends loved him dearly, of course. There is a GoFundMe set up by Jack's Aunt April for the community to donate for funeral expenses, if they wish. You can access that, by clicking here.

It's unfathomable to think two young kids could do this to another kid. One that was trying to help them. Our thoughts remain with the Snyder family, all of Jack's friends, teammates, bandmates and those that loved him.
