Law Enforcement Officer’s Gun Found at Lapeer High School
Officials are investigating after a weapon was found early this morning at Lapeer High School. It has since been determined that the gun belongs to a law enforcement agent.
A letter from Lapeer Community Schools Superintendent Matthew Wandrie informed parents that the gun was discovered by a school staff member before the beginning of the school day today (2/11).
Gun Determined to Belong to Law Enforcement
School administrators worked with the Lapeer City Police Department to determine that the weapon was the property of a law enforcement agent outside of Lapeer County.

However, the identity of the person who misplaced the gun and the police agency tied to the weapon have not been identified.
"Lapeer City Police leadership has been in contact with that outside agency and has assumed control of the investigation at this time," Wandrie noted in the correspondence.
No Further Weapons Found
Wandrie went on to say that a thorough search of both the interior and exterior of Lapeer High School was conducted and no further weapons were found.
The letter stresses that there was no threat to students and staff and that the district makes safety a priority.
"As a result of the collaborative efforts of district and city officials, it was determined that our students and staff were never in any danger," Wandrie said.
Situation Raises Questions About Police Responsibility
What has yet to be determined is how a law enforcement officer's weapon wound up lying in the parking lot of a high school? Although there were no injuries and student safety was supposedly never in jeopardy, we wonder how a responsible member of law enforcement could possibly lose a weapon.
