A Genesee County father is outraged after his four-year-old daughter was dropped off at the wrong stop on her first day of school and left alone for several minutes. Instead of her assigned location, the young girl was mistakenly let off at an RV park.

Father’s Panic as Bus Misses Stop

At the end of her first school day, Kearsley parent Robert McMillan and several friends and family members were waiting at the bus stop for his daughter, Gracelynn. But confusion set in when the bus drove past without stopping. McMillan flagged down the driver, only to be told that Gracelynn wasn’t on board.

Child Found Alone at Wrong Location

Panicked, McMillan shouted, “Where’s my kid?” The driver quickly radioed other buses, and another driver eventually found Gracelynn alone at Pinewood Estates, standing near a mailbox. Visibly upset, she told the driver, “I don’t know where my daddy is.” That driver then safely brought her to the correct stop.

District Responds to Mistake

Kearsley Superintendent Paul Gaudard confirmed that district procedures were not followed. Policy requires that a parent or guardian be present for drop-offs involving Pre-K, Kindergarten, and first-grade students. In a statement, Gaudard said Gracelynn was left alone for about three and a half minutes. He expressed regret and promised corrective measures.

McMillan disputes that timeline, insisting his daughter was alone for five to 10 minutes. He says the series of failures—including dropping her at the wrong stop, failing to confirm a guardian’s presence, and leaving her unattended—were unacceptable.

Although Gracelynn is safe and doing well, McMillan said he plans to personally handle her school transportation moving forward.
