A traffic stop in Rochester, Michigan ended better than most.

Officer Brennen Flanigan literally stopped traffic when he spotted something in the roadway. That 'something' turned out to be a kitten that was in distress in the middle of the road.

Police Officer With a Big Heart

It turns out that Officer Flanigan felt such a fond with the female kitten that he decided to adopt her. The Rochester Police Department made the announcement yesterday (9/26) on their Facebook page.

"While returning from a call today, Officer Flanigan noticed a distressed kitten in the roadway. He then stopped traffic and rescued the kitten! Officer Flanigan is going to adopt her…any name suggestions?"

After ABC News picked up the story, the department was inundated with name suggestions for the feline.

Just moments ago (Friday afternoon) the department reported getting hundreds of name suggestions from around the US.

Here's the note from the Rochester Police Department's chief:

"Good Morning All,
Pretty cool of our department making national news regarding Officer Flanigan saving a kitten. We have received hundreds of calls and emails from people all over the United States with a name for the cat. It is nice being recognized for the small things we do each day. Thank you all for your support."
Officer Flanigan reports that he's narrowed the name choices down to Lucky, Spooky, and Shadow.

"What I hope the public takes away from this is no how small of an act you complete, it can really have a big impact," Flanigan says. "That's what I hope to provide for this little kitten here."
