What is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause serious health issues. While it can cause mild symptoms in healthy individuals, such as fever and diarrhea, it can be severe and even fatal for young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, Listeria can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.
"FSIS is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health partners to investigate the multistate outbreak of L. monocytogenes infections linked to meats sliced at delis. As of July 25, 2024, 34 sick people have been identified in 13 states, including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths", the announcement said.
The Food Safety & Inspection Service advises anyone who purchased any of the recalled Boar's Head products should discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Anything that the products touch should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
