MS-13 in Michigan: Routine Traffic Stop Leads to Shocking Arrest
A man the FBI identifies as a suspected MS-13 gang member is now in federal custody after a traffic stop in Michigan took an unexpected turn last week. What began as a routine pull-over near W. Utica and Dequindre Road in Shelby Township quickly became something far more serious.
Records Check Raises Red Flags
Police say the driver, Walter Ceron Linares, handed over an El Salvadorian ID when officers asked for identification. That part seemed pretty normal, but once dispatch ran his information, things escalated quickly. The system flagged Linares as someone possibly connected to a terrorist organization, and officers were instructed to contact the FBI right away.
FBI Confirms MS-13 Gang Connection
According to Shelby Township police, the FBI confirmed that Linares was on their terrorist watch list as a suspected MS-13 member. Officers took him into custody without any trouble and held him at the scene until U.S. Border Patrol agents arrived. Border Patrol also confirmed his identity and described him as a dangerous MS-13 gang member before taking him into federal custody for processing.

Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide said the arrest is a reminder of how seriously the department takes community safety. He pointed to strong working relationships with state and federal agencies, as well as the day-to-day vigilance of local officers. 'Our top priority is keeping Shelby Township safe,' he said, noting that stopping threats before they reach the community is the goal.
National Enforcement Efforts Continue
The timing of the arrest also lines up with a broader nationwide effort by federal officials to track down undocumented immigrants who are tied to violent crime or gang activity. These operations have focused on identifying high-risk individuals like MS-13 members.

As for Linares, federal authorities have not released any additional details about his background or what he may have been involved in. For now, he remains in federal custody as the investigation continues.
