Michigan Recall Widens: 7M Pounds Of Deli Meat Now Affected
As the investigation into the recent deadly outbreak of listeria food poisoning intensifies, Boar's Head has announced a significant expansion of its deli meat recall. The company is now recalling an additional 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat products produced at its Virginia plant,
As we told you recently, Boar's Head Provisions announced a recall of more than 207,000 pounds of meat products due to potential Listeria contamination. This recall affects various pre-packaged meats, including deli meats and sausages, which were distributed nationwide.
The original recall mainly affected Boar's Head liverwurst, but the company included other deli meat products that were manufactured on the same line during a specific time frame 7 as a precaution. The ready-to-eat liverwurst products, Boar’s Head Strassburger Brand Liverwurst MADE IN VIRGINIA, were produced between June 11, 2024, and July 17, 2024, and have a 44-day shelf life and have sell-by dates ranging from July 25 to August 30, 2024.
The new expansion includes 71 products produced between May 10, 2024, and July 29, 2024, under the Boar’s Head and Old Country brand names. These items include meat intended for slicing at retail delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations. These products have “sell by” dates ranging from 29 July 2024 through 17 October 24, according to the FSIS.
"FSIS is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health partners to investigate the multistate outbreak of L. monocytogenes infections linked to meats sliced at delis. As of July 30, 2024, 34 sick people have been identified in 13 states, including 33 hospitalizations and two deaths", the recall notice said.
The meat was distributed to stores nationwide, as well as to the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama.
Anyone who has the recalled products in their homes should not eat them and should discard them or return them to stores for a refund. FSIS also urges consumers who have purchased these products to clean refrigerators thoroughly to prevent the risk of cross-contamination.
