Can we all agree that dessert is often the best part of any meal? Desserts have long been a sweet staple across the United States, with each region boasting its own iconic treat.

From New York’s creamy cheesecake to Louisiana’s beignets, these desserts tell the story of their origins and local flavors. For generations, these sugary delights have been more than just food, they've been a way to celebrate, share culture, and showcase the unique ingredients of each area, and Michigan is no different.

Recently Stacker put together a list of the 'Signature Dessert From Each State'. These are often the recipes that truly tell the story of America.

"In the United States, many of the most iconic and popular desserts are those handed down from generation to generation, often having traveled from Europe along with the earliest colonists. Others, however, speak to the most American experiences—whether it's thinking of creative ways to compensate for shortages of key baking ingredients or capitalizing on the most abundant local crops", Stacker wrote.

The team at Stacker took a look at all of the staple desserts from the 50 states and those that most residents seem to love the most to compile the list of the top choice for each.

What is Michigan's Signature Dessert?

This one should come as no surprise, or at least the main ingredient shouldn't. Michigan's signature dessert is the Tarty Cherry Pie.

"The state of Michigan—particularly in Traverse City—is one of the leading producers of tart cherries in the U.S., a commercial endeavor that began in 1893. That means it's got a unique take on the traditional cherry pie", Stacker wrote. "In Michigan, cherry pies are most likely to be made with Montmorency cherries, which originated in France's Montmorency Valley."
