Mayhem Festival Discovery: Islander, ‘Coconut Dracula’

Mayhem Festival is always a great place to discover new bands. This year, the festival featured three side stages, and each offered a mix of new and veteran talent.

I discovered a few bands new to my ears at Mayhem Festival at DTE Energy Music Festival last week. Islander is one that really stands out.

Islander hail from Greenville, S.C., and make a mix of nu-metal and rock that's melodic but still heavy. Lead singer Mikey Carvajal is very active with the Whosoevers, an outreach and support organization that includes a bunch of Christians, including Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D., Brian "Head" Welch of Korn and Love and Death and more.
