An effort to impeach Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been stalled by the Republican House Speaker in Michigan.

Lee Chatfield calls the effort a "distraction" to what needs to be done in Michigan. The Republican House Speaker from Levering denounced other Republican leaders' efforts on Wednesday.

Republican Matt Maddock initiated the idea of Whitmer's impeachment, saying she "crossed the line" by implementing new COVID-19 restrictions on Michiganders without input from Michigan's legislature.

Although Sunday's announcement was presented by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in Lansing, the new restrictions were actually put in place by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Accoding to Fox 17, Chatfield, who is also a Republican, said the effort to impeach Governor Whitmer would "lack merit and would be every bit as shameful as the impeachment efforts against President Donal Trump."

On Tuesday, the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association filed a lawsuit against Robert Gordon, who is the director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in an attempt to reverse Michigan's temporary restrictions that have shuttered dining room service in restaurants across Michigan since Wednesday.

As of now, there is no resolution on that lawsuit, and Michigan's new tighter restrictions currently remain in effect.
