It is a confusing time to follow The Walking Dead. A few major upsets had fans wondering if Season 9 might break from the comic entirely, but first photos from the Georgia set tease a strange new (albeit familiar) look for the AMC zombie drama. Is that time-jump happening after all?

The Walking Dead is no stranger to unexpected deaths, but deviations from the comic often raise questions. To wit, a fan-favorite star now confirms his surprisingly early exit was a specific request to showrunners, given behind-the-scenes turmoil.

The Walking Dead finale kicking off of a major comic arc again raises the question of whether AMC’s adaptation might overtake Robert Kirkman’s comics in due course. Kirkman has denied that AMC might ever reveal his ideas early, as Game of Thrones dealt with, and now Kirkman insists neither he nor showrunners would allow the series to catch up.

The Walking Dead has had no shortage of controversy since the brain-bashing arrival of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan, though the series may have inadvertently stoked racial tension as well. U.K. suppliers apparently pulled official merchandise over accusations of racism, though Morgan himself dismisses the controversy with “people are stupid.”

Yesterday we caught what looked to be a Walking Dead deviation for Rick and co., as the group met a junkyard gang on their way to “Rise Up” against Negan. Now, new photos from the 2017 premiere and beyond see the Saviors making an unwelcome return to Alexandria, while producers promise “one of the most ingenious walkers is coming up in the second half.”

Even the most downtrodden of Walking Dead fans are likely looking forward to Season 7B as a call to action, at least over the punishing and dreary first half. Now, new photos show Rick and the team back in action, while a fresh synopsis for the February premiere teases “new survivors in incredible places,” and “treachery from people we trust.”
