Deftones’ Chino Moreno Records ‘Brief Exchange’ for DC’s ‘Dark Nights: Metal’ Soundtrack
Here's something new to get you through the dark nights. Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has lent his talents to a new song called "Brief Exchange" that will turn up as part of the DC Comics' Dark Nights: Metal soundtrack.
The new Moreno song sounds right in the singer's wheelhouse, starting with the vocalist singing in whisper vocals over an ominously dark and building backing. The track features aggressive guitars, a little of the familiar ebb-and-flow vibe and Moreno's quiet-loud dynamic fully explored from intimate moments in the verses to a full on scream during the heaviest parts. "Brief Exchange" is available here.
The Dark Nights: Metal soundtrack was initially announced in 2017, with Warner Bros. teaming up with the Batman talent team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo.
“As both a musician and fan of heavy metal music, having a soundtrack for Dark Nights: Metal is pretty awesome,” said Capullo at the time. “I really like the concept of having hard-driving, heavy music as a complement to the incredible story that Scott and I are telling.”
For the musical side of the project, Marilyn Manson collaborator and composer Tyler Bates and producer Mike Elizondo were tapped to oversee the project. The tracks are meant to accompany the releases in the Dark Nights: Metal comics line. For "Brief Exchange," Moreno is joined on the track by Bates on guitar, Elizondo on bass and Gil Sharone of Dillinger Escape Plan and Puscifer fame on drums.
“I’m really honored by this,” said writer Scott Snyder. “So many of the Batman stories that Greg and I have worked on together have been fueled or influenced by music that inspired us; this story in particular has rock and metal music as the engine driving it all. To have something like this come together is a huge thrill.”
Meanwhile, Moreno and his Deftones bandmates have been splitting time between the studio, where they're working on new music, and the road, where they are playing a handful of festivals this summer and fall. Stay up to date on their shows here.
