This guy probably thought he was being a real saint by offering a couple of panhandlers something better than a few bucks. When they refused, he trolled the ever-living ish out of them... allegedly.

You never can tell if stories like this are authentic or some kind of social experiment/hoax, but I decided to share this one simply because it raises an interesting question -- is what this guy did okay? Let's examine what few details we know, assuming that this is something that really happened and not complete internet bulls***.

There were a couple of guys asking for handouts on a corner in Muscatine, Iowa, something we see all the time here in Flint. One gentleman, identified by WQAD8 as Mike Pothoff, claims he offered them jobs instead of a quick buck. You know, the old "teach a man to fish" bit. When they refused his offer to earn some money, he made his own sign that read:

"Offered these guys a job and they said no. Don't give money."

Aside from those claiming the story is fake -- which very well could be the case -- many are asking whether what "Mike" did in this situation is acceptable. I say that, if it's true -- yes. He absolutely had the right to shame these two after they turned down an offer to help themselves. The reason being that there are people out there who do this every day and end up taking home more money than I do. And I say "taking home" because they have homes, and are not homeless like many of them pretend to be.

You're probably saying, "how do you know?" Well, because I've seen it. I have worked in a few establishments near hot-spots for beggars. After a long 5 hour day of asking people to surrender their hard-earned money, these beggars would come into said place of business, order extravagant meals and alcoholic beverages, and then drive off in vehicles after paying their bill and tipping their server generously. This happened more than once, with more than one group of regular panhandlers, in more than one place.

Some people make a career out of looking pathetic and preying on your sympathy. Anyone looking for a handout that turns down an opportunity to help themselves is likely one of those career-beggars... that's my take, anyway. What do you think?
