Earlier this year Michiganders were paying insane prices for eggs due to a deadly bird flu outbreak.

Egg prices went up nearly 50% in 2022 and into early 2023. For months they were at an all-time high.

The reason we were paying so much for eggs had nothing to do with politics like so many people were claiming. It was a highly contagious avian flu that swept across the globe the previous year with major egg producers in the United States losing millions of birds. It was devastating; roughly 58 million birds died across the country. That included more than 40 million egg-laying hens.

Well, it's almost 2024 and there's a chance we could end up in the same boat again.

Why Are Egg Prices Going Up Again?

It's going to feel like deja vu as once again, egg prices are expected to rise.

According to Bloomberg, egg prices are likely to rise again after the top US producer's first-ever outbreak of deadly avian influenzaCal-Maine Foods Inc. in a statement Tuesday said one of its facilities in Kansas tested positive for highly pathogenic bird flu, affecting 684,000 egg-laying hens, or about 1.6% of its flock.

At the moment, it's unclear how severely this bird flu outbreak will hit shoppers' wallets. This is the last thing we need, especially when we're already paying through the roof for our groceries and other necessities.

This Isn't Our First Eggflation Rodeo

As we brace for another round of potential egg price hikes due to the bird flu, hang in there. We got through it the first time and we'll get through it again. Here's to hoping our grocery bills catch a break soon
