Puddle of Mudd guitarist Paul Phillips says that recording their latest album, a collection of classic rock covers titled 'Re:(disc)overed', helped the band find a new groove.

Puddle of Mudd initially began the path to their latest album with the intentions of it being a Puddle of Mudd album. As guitarist Paul Phillips told Billboard previously, it didn't quite work out like that:

"Since we started we've been non-stop -- make a record, go on tour, then right into rehearsals and the next record, then back on tour...We were really burned out, and when we started trying to write again it just wasn't time yet. And we had been doing (AC/DC's) 'TNT' and (the Steve Miller Band's) 'The Joker' and had so much fun with those that one thing led to another and we decided to make a covers record. It was just something fun to do, and we had a blast."

Now that the experience is behind them and the album is in stores, Puddle of Mudd is hitting the road for the next few months. Phillips recently told Artist Direct that treading through the material of others helped the band find a new dynamic within themselves:

"Doing something like that opens your mind to trying different things. There may be a piano song on the next record, which is something you'd never think you'd hear from Puddle of Mudd in 2001. It's very inspiring, and it takes you in different directions in your head of what this band could do if it wants to. I'm not saying we're going to take a crazy left turn, but it's definitely opened up new avenues. We wanted to say we can do different things, but we are Puddle of Mudd."

The band is currently on the Rock Allegiance tour and will embark on a 13-date headlining tour after wrapping up a brief overseas tour with SOiL.
