Although some of my friends have had luck with online dating sites, I’ve always been a bit leery. Now, a woman from Des Moines, Iowa, has reportedly lost $12,000 to a man she met on Match.com, further adding to my theory that you have to watch out for crazies on those sites.

According to the Des Moines Register, police are listing a case of fraud in which the woman became involved with a man who began asking her for assistance in the form of lots of cash.

In December 2010, this man claimed he was working in South America and couldn’t return home without financial help. So, the woman sent him $2,000 through Western Union. The check apparently went to an address in Equador. Further cash transactions followed, until the woman (finally) realized the whole thing was a scam.

So, if you needed a reason to steer clear of those sites, there you go!
