In memory of those we lost in the 9/11 attacks, the 'Spirit of America' blood drive returns to Michigan International Speedway today.

Until 7 pm tonight, Michigan International Speedway is hosting the 19th annual "9/11 Spirit of America" blood drive. Anyone can donate as long as they meet the requirements for donation.

Donors must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age. (16 with parental consent)
  • Pass a health screening and get their temperature taken before donating.
  • Have proper photo identification that includes their birthday.
  • Wear a face mask or face covering.

If you haven't donated blood before, the process takes about an hour. Appointments for the blood drive are encouraged but walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment, you can call 1-866-642-5663 or visit Versiti online at http://www.versiti.org/Michigan.

The blood drive is being run by the Versiti Blood Center of Michigan. To make sure the blood drive is as safe as possible, all of the Versiti Blood Center employees will be wearing face masks or coverings and will also have their temperatures checked before their shift. Social distancing will be observed at all times during the blood drive and the staff of Versiti Blood Center will cleaning and disinfecting all equipment and work stations at he blood drive.

The "Spirit of America Blood Drive" at Michigan International Speedway is located at 12626 U.S. 12 in Brooklyn, MI. Since the start of the annual blood drive, the staff has been able to collect 11,842 blood donations over the 19 years. Those donations in turn have been able to help save 34,444 Michigan residents.
