Best Thermostat Setting to Beat the Michigan Summer Heat
Things are really starting to heat up in Michigan, which means more and more people are firing up their air conditioners.
Next week, we're really going to feel the summer heat as temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s.
Depending on your thermostat settings, you could end up spending way too much on your next energy bill. However, some experts suggest there is a 'best thermostat setting for summer.'
What is the Best Temperature Setting to Beat the Michigan Summer Heat?
According to Constellation, The best thermostat setting for summer is 78°F when you’re at home. While The U.S. Department of Energy also suggests setting your thermostat to 78°F, they say you should only do this while you're at home.
Here are a few additional tips to optimize your thermostat settings during summer:
- While Away: Set the thermostat to 85°F or higher when you are not at home.
- At Night: You can raise the temperature slightly while you sleep if you find 78°F too cool.
- Using a Programmable Thermostat: A programmable thermostat can automatically adjust the temperature according to your schedule, saving energy when cooling isn't needed.
Keep in mind, these are just suggestions to save energy and money. At the end of the day, it really comes down to your personal preference. If I'm at home, 78°F is almost unbearable for me. I usually keep the house at 73°F, which I find to be most comfortable. At night, I like to sleep really cold, so I'll drop it down to 68°F. Yes, I pay more, but it's worth it if I'm getting a good night's sleep.
