It’s hard to believe that kids are already back to school in Michigan—or for some, getting ready to go back. We figured this was a good time to point out some things your child should avoid while waiting for the bus.

Regardless of a child's age, it's always a good idea to teach or remind them of the dangers that come with waiting for the bus.

While most of what we discuss here may seem like common sense, it's still important to have a conversation with them, just to be safe.

Things kids should avoid doing while waiting at the bus stop:

  • Playing Near the Curb: Kids should stay away from the road's edge to avoid accidents.
  • Running or Horseplay: Kids can easily trip, fall, or get pushed into the road if they get a little too wild and crazy.
  • Talking to Strangers: Emphasize the importance of staying cautious around unfamiliar people. Teach them to always pay attention to their surroundings—this is a skill they should use for the rest of their lives.
  • Using Distracting Devices: Phones or tablets can divert kids' attention, making them unaware of approaching vehicles. A distracted child also becomes an easier target for a predator.
  • Crossing the Street Without Looking: Remind them to always check both ways before crossing, even if the bus is in sight. They should also look both ways even if the bus has come to a complete stop. Many drivers don’t notice or ignore the bus's flashing lights.
  • Ignoring the Bus Driver’s Signals: Kids should be taught to wait for the driver’s signal before approaching the bus.
  • Leaving the Bus Stop Area: Wandering off can be risky if the bus arrives and they’re not there.
  • Running to the Bus If Late: This can be extremely dangerous if they run across a road and neglect to pay attention to traffic.

Good luck this school year!
