Chris Evans had many excellent costumes as Captain America. The one in The Avengers is maybe the least excellent he had.

Through the years, fans have not always been kind to Cap’s Avengers’ suit — and neither have Marvel’s movies themselves. In Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark makes fun of it when (SPOILERS) his Avengers team returns to 2012 to retrieve an Infinity Stone and observes the aftermath of the first Avengers movie. “It's ridiculous!” Tony chuckles, even noting that it does nothing for Steve Rogers’ ass.

Well the joking extended behind the scenes too. Even Chris Evans gets in on the fun in the Avengers: Endgame gag reel available on the home video version of the film and just released online. “I can’t believe I made a whole movie with this thing on!” Evans says as he struggles to adjust Cap’s helmet.

In our recent interview with Ryan Meinerding, Marvel’s head of visual development, he noted that the Cap Avengers costume was one of the ones he wishes could have been refined a bit more before production. But he also noted that part of fun of Marvel is that they can revise characters’ costumes in future movies (Cap’s costumes post-Avengers were great, including his final suit in Endgame) and even poke fun at themselves — like with Tony’s jokes in this movie. “It's amazing to see what they can do with the different stories and see how they can twist and turn them to make it so that the things that were less successful become more successful over time,” Meinerding explained.

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD now. The Blu-ray and DVD goes on sale on August 13.
