You may or may not be aware that the government has banned the sale of certain light bulbs in the U.S., including in Michigan. The ban went into effect in 2023 but didn’t really make headlines, so a lot of folks might still be picking up bulbs that aren’t allowed anymore.

With the holidays quickly approaching and some people already pulling out their Christmas decorations, we thought it’d be a good time to remind you about the recent ban.

I recently saw an article that mentioned some Christmas lights are banned. That’s not necessarily the case.

Are Your Christmas Lights Banned in Michigan?

To be clear, it isn’t specifically Christmas lights that are banned; it’s certain types of light bulbs, including some incandescent ones, that are prohibited due to safety concerns. According to CNN, lights containing incandescent bulbs that don’t meet current safety standards are no longer allowed for sale

While Christmas lights aren’t directly included in the ban on light bulbs producing fewer than 45 lumens per watt, many traditional incandescent Christmas lights do fall below that threshold. This means they could be affected by the ban on manufacturing and selling those types of bulbs.

Keep in mind that you can still use your existing incandescent Christmas lights. Even if you have some old-school incandescent bulbs that don’t meet the new standards, you don’t need to toss them out. As long as they’re already in your possession, you can continue to use them during the holiday season.

Switch to LED Lights

The best thing you can do is switch to LED lights. They’re safer, use way less energy, and come in all sorts of colors and styles to jazz up your holiday decorations. Plus, you won’t have to stress about any new regulations, so you can just enjoy the season
