Cigarettes Will No Longer Be Sold at Walmart in Some States

After years of debate, it looks like Walmart will no longer sell cigarettes in some states. Don't worry smokers, Michigan isn't one of those states on the list...yet.

Cigarettes are being removed from stores shelves in some states including California, Florida, Arkansas and New Mexico. Some states are already used to this as Walmart doesn’t sell tobacco in New York and in parts of Massachusetts due to local laws involving tobacco sales and pharmacies.

Why is Walmart Making this Move?

Walmart is the fifth-largest provider of pharmacy services. According to Fortune, the company wants to leverage its shopper traffic to sell customers health care services such as urgent care, X-rays, dental cleanings, and blood work at low prices, at a time when millions of Americans have lost their benefits and health care costs are out of control.

It's not like cigarettes are being banned in the entire state, it's only one store. It shouldn't be a major inconvenience either as the majority of smokers don't really look to Walmart for their tobacco. There are still plenty of gas stations and liquor stores that will continue to carry cigarettes.

I highly doubt the company will take a big hit from this move. Look at Target, they did away with tobacco sales back in the mid-90s and they're doing just fine.

Walmart hasn't said whether or not this is something that they plan on doing nationwide. I think it's safe to say we're in the early stages of something that is going to happen nationwide. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
