Claire’s Bankruptcy Forces Closure of Two Michigan Stores

A big retail store with locations all over Michigan just filed for bankruptcy.

As of August 2025, Claire's has over 30 stores in Michigan and has just announced the closing of two specific locations.

If you are in the Flint area, the Claire's store inside Genesee Valley Center hasn't been listed for closure at this time.

Which Claire’s locations in Michigan are closing?

According to USA Today, the following locations are closing,

• Bay City Town Center in Bay City
• Woodland Mall in Grand Rapids

Fans of Claire’s may want to take advantage of upcoming closing sales, as all affected stores are expected to close by September 7th, 2025.

This is a tough situation for the employees in Bay City and Grand Rapids. Job loss is always the most difficult part of any store closing. I hope they were notified before the news went public.

Claire's in Genesee Valley Center in Flint Township is always my go-to spot for the annual Ironsnake 80s Prom at The Machine Shop. As mentioned above, the Genesee County Claire's is currently marked safe.

Unfortunately, there is a possibility that additional store closures will be announced in the future, as the company continues to evaluate its financial situation.

Addressing the store closures, CEO Chris Cramer shared the following in an official statement,

This decision is difficult, but a necessary one. Increased competition, consumer spending trends, and the ongoing shift away from brick-and-mortar retail, in combination with our current debt obligations and macroeconomic factors, necessitate this course of action for Claire's and its stakeholders.

We remain in active discussions with potential strategic and financial partners and are committed to completing our review of strategic alternatives
