In Michigan, even dead men are expected to pay fines. According to a report from WNEM-TV, a Caro man who died in jail 17 years ago recently received a summons to appear in court over failure to pay the court costs associated with his criminal case.

The man’s widow, Monoco Lee, told reporters that the letter, which came in the mail on Valentines Day, was addressed to Louis Peters II – who died in jail in 1997, just before standing trial for assaulting her. "I was the victim. So it brought up a lot of bad memories," she said. "I mean, I'm sitting here shaking just thinking about it. It took me a long time to get away from him and to get him out of my head and now the courts are bringing it back?"

The summons ordered Peters to appear in court over the matter of unpaid fines, which has Lee confused over how such a big mistake can rear its ugly head nearly two decades later. "He died in their jail," she said. "How can they say … 17 years later 'let's go after him for fees' and all that?"

Although the letter was clearly an error, Peters is not off the hook just yet. Court officials say they are investigating the matter in hopes of determining how a supposed dead man ended up on the court docket. However, until that determination is made, Peters will be expected to show up in court…or have a warrant issued for his arrest.
