I'll be the first to admit I'm terrible when it comes to replacing the batteries in the smoke detectors in my home. For whatever reason, I just don't ever think about it.

I know it's important to change the batteries in smoke detectors in your home but I didn't realize how important it was to change out the smoke detector itself.

According to ABC12,  Grand Blanc Fire Chief Robert Burdette says like most things, smoke detectors have a shelf life that people should be aware of. He says people should replace smoke detectors after a decade. Carbon monoxide detectors have an expiration date too.

I know I haven't changed my batteries in over a year and my smoke detectors are at least 15 years old. To top off the fact that I'm irresponsible, I don't even have a carbon monoxide detector in my house. I need to get my crap together asap.
