Quentin Tarantino’s eighth movie is named The Hateful Eight. How perfect is that? That could practically be the title of his entire filmography.

Fellini would have loved that title, but only Tarantino could have made this movie, a bleak and bloody Western about a bunch of strangers holed up in a cabin while they ride out a blizzard. Kurt Russell’s transporting a prisoner to a hanging (Jennifer Jason Leigh), but he gets trapped by this storm with Samuel L. Jackson’s bounty hunter, Bruce Dern’s Confederate soldier, Walton Goggin’s sheriff, and Michael Madsen’s “cow puncher.” That turns this snowy hideout into a pressure cooker.

There’s been a lot of talk in recent weeks about Tarantino’s political views, but The Hateful Eight itself looks awesome. And it’ll probably look even better in “glorious 70mm Ultra Panavision,” the massive widescreen format it’ll be playing in in select theaters come this December. The trailer definitely evokes Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (about a bunch of distrustful bank robbers — and one undercover cop  trapped together in a warehouse) crossed with Django Unchained, with a dash of Stagecoach and McCabe & Mrs. Miller’s wintery ambiance. It’s practically a cast of Quentin Tarantino All-Stars too, with Russell (from Death Proof) and Jackson (from everything) looking to be the core (and awesome) conflict that drives the movie.

The Hateful Eight opens in limited release on Christmas Day. It expands on January 8. You’re going to want to see it on the big screen, on actual film if possible.
