Your Favorite Hot Sauce May Temporarily Disappear From Michigan Shelves

Oh no, here we go again.

Michigan and the rest of the country may soon face a shortage of one of its most popular hot sauces. If you remember, we endured something similar in 2023.

It's going to feel like deja vu as another Sriracha shortage might be on the horizon.

According to USA Today, Huy Fong Foods, the producer of the iconic Sriracha sauce found in bottles with a rooster logo and green caps, has announced a production halt until after Labor Day. This news has raised concerns about the potential for another shortage.

Why Might There Be a Sriracha Shortage?

The red jalapeño chile peppers that deliver the hot sauce's tangy sweet heat aren't red enough. Apparently, the peppers are still too green, affecting the sauce's color.

So what does all of this mean for you? Well, it means that if you're not stocked up on Sriracha, you may have to go without. Or possibly switch to another brand that isn't dealing with the same issues as Huy Fong Foods.

It's unclear if consumers will actually see empty Sriracha shelves this summer or not.

The Great Sriracha Scare

Huy Fong Foods and its customers endured a similar situation back in 2020 when the company halted its Sriracha production due to a crop shortage. The same problem repeated in 2022 and 2023.

I remember the sriracha shelves were empty for a long time. You could still buy the product from third-party sellers on Amazon but they wanted people to pay an insane $52 per bottle. No one needs Sriracha that bad.
