USA Today Names This Michigan Gem a Top 5 Midwest Small Town
I might be a little biased, since I live in the Midwest, but the Midwest is pretty excellent.
When it comes to vibrant big cities and wonderful small towns, the Midwest has it all. So it's no surprise that USA Today is showing some love to the Midwest.
Best Small Towns in the Midwest
Recently, USA Today put together another one of its top ten lists, this time ranking the 'Best Small Town in the Midwest' for 2026.
To be considered a small town, it has to have a population of less than 25,000 people. And to crack the top ten, it has to be elite.
Of course, Michigan made the list!
Coming in at number five is Mackinac Island!
Mackinac Island Ranks Top 5 of the 'Best Small Towns in the Midwest'
Here's why USA Today ranked Michigan's favorite island at number five on the list:
A Midwestern bucket-list destination, car-free Mackinac Island is filled with Victorian charm, historic sites, horse-drawn carriages, and world-famous fudge. Visitors have their choice of take-it-easy activities like Fort Mackinac exploration, biking around the island, or sampling a meal with a gorgeous view at the Grand Hotel’s elegant dining room.
There is something so different and special about Mackinac Island that even native Michiganders make it a point to visit the island.
