If you’re heading to downtown Flint on Thursday, you’ll want to give yourself a little extra time and maybe a little extra patience. The Downtown Development Authority says parking could be tough because a large crowd is expected for the funeral of Charles “Chuck” Redmond. That turnout says a lot about the kind of impact he had.

Redmond, a Flint police officer since December 2020, died on Feb. 8 in Mt. Morris Township. Flint Police Chief Terence Green said he took his own life in a church parking lot. MLive reports that his death remains under investigation by Michigan State Police.

Service Details for Officer Chuck Redmond

His funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church on South Saginaw Street, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. The service is expected to draw friends, neighbors, fellow officers, and law enforcement from across the state. Additional visitations are being held this week at Rossell Funeral Home in Flushing.

Beyond the uniform and the badge, this is a family grieving a husband and a father. Redmond is survived by his wife, Melissa, and their seven children. A verified GoFundMe set up to help the family has already surpassed its $30,000 goal, reflecting how many lives he touched. Before joining the Flint Police Department, he also served as a corrections officer, paramedic, sheriff’s deputy, and officer in Mt. Morris.
