Michigan City Schools Cancelled Due to Vandalism
Parents in Michigan City faced an unexpected disruption on Tuesday as roughly a third of the school district’s bus fleet was vandalized, with catalytic converters stolen from about 20 buses. The theft made it impossible for the district to operate its buses, forcing a sudden switch to remote learning for students. The setup mirrored the system used during the COVID-19 pandemic, but parents had only minutes to adjust.
Unexpected Michigan City Bus Fleet Vandalism
The problem was first noticed early Tuesday morning by a veteran bus driver who heard an unusual noise from one of the buses. Engineers and mechanics inspected the vehicle and discovered the catalytic converter was missing.

Further inspections revealed that over a dozen additional buses had been hit, effectively grounding about one-third of the district’s fleet.
Immediate Impact on Students and Parents
Parents scrambled to make sure their children could participate in remote learning on such short notice. Younger students required close supervision, which added stress for families balancing multiple schedules. “It’s been challenging to get everything set up quickly,” said one parent. “The kids need help with logging in, and it’s hard to keep them focused with everything happening so suddenly.”
Gradual Return to In-Person Classes
By Wednesday, the district managed to return early learners and elementary students to in-person classrooms, but middle and high school students continued remote learning as repairs on the bus fleet continued. Officials are working to restore full operations and ensure that transportation will be available for all students as soon as possible.
This incident highlights both the vulnerability of school transportation to theft and the flexibility required by families and districts when unexpected events disrupt learning.
