But even surrounded by water, boaters aren’t immune to danger. The unthinkable happened just before noon on Friday near a lighthouse at the tip of Michigan’s Thumb in Port Austin.
Explosion Rocks Lake Huron Boat
A boat on Lake Huron suddenly exploded without warning, launching five people into the air. Four of them suffered injuries from the blast. In a twist of fate, all five landed back in the boat — which, despite the explosion, miraculously remained afloat.
Victims Include Mother and Young Son
Among the injured were a 38-year-old mother and her 8-year-old son. They were rushed to McLaren Thumb Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

An off-duty firefighter happened to be nearby on his own boat when the explosion rocked the shoreline. He immediately jumped into action, helping get the family to safety. The Huron County Sheriff’s Office and Port Austin Fire Department also responded quickly to the scene.
Officials Blame Gas Leak for Boat Blast
Following an investigation, officials believe a gas leak allowed fumes to build up and ignite. Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson said in a statement, “They are lucky to be alive. Frankly, it’s strange that the outer hull never blew out as well to where the boat may have sunk.”
