Michigan Lottery Club Nabs Whopping $1 Million Powerball Jackpot

The members of a Southeast Michigan Lottery club are celebrating after taking home a $1 million Powerball jackpot from the Michigan Lottery.

Powerball Jackpot Climbed to $1.7 Billion Earlier This Year

Remember when the Powerball jackpot swelled to $1.765 billion in October? Although the grand prize ticket was sold in California on October 11, six $1 million dollar winners were sold in Michigan during that historic 12-week run.

The two-person Sandy Island Cove MLC Lottery Club matched five white balls in the October 7 drawing, scoring the club a cool million bucks. According to the Michigan Lottery, Robert Hoerauf is one of the club's members. Hoerauf bought the winning ticket at Northview Wine Shoppe in Macomb.

Club members declined to share how they intend to spend their Powerball winnings.

Can Michigan Lottery Jackpot Winners Remain Anonymous?

Under current Michigan law, players who win more than $10,000 in winnings playing in-state lottery games can remain anonymous. However, with multi-state games like Powerball and Mega Millions, players anonymity is not protected.

But Michigan law may be changing. The state legislature is considering a bill that would allow multi-state jackpot winners in our state to remain anonymous. That would make Michigan the 11th state in the US to enact such legislation.

There is a Lottery Loophole

Although Michigan law currently prohibits anonymity, there is a way for large jackpot winners to remain anonymous. Winners can form an official lottery club and hire a paid representative, such as an attorney or financial advisor, to be the club's public representative.
