Mitch Albom + 9 Volunteers Rescued After Vising Orphanage in Haiti

Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom and his wife were among a group of 10 volunteers rescued from Haiti, after visiting an orphanage run by his charity.

The group was rescued by a helicopter, airlifted from Port-au-Prince, Haiti in the middle of the night. The effort was Congress members Lisa McClain and Corey Mills

There were many failed attempts to leave the war-torn nation, he and the other volunteers attempted to leave Saturday because of the ongoing conflict. Albom makes monthly visits to the orphanage, run by his charity 'Have Faith Haiti.' According to the Detroit Free Press, eight of the 10 volunteers on the mission are from Michigan.

In the video below, Albom tells WJBK-TV that while he's grateful to have been rescued, it's important to remember those still stranded.

"It was very, very fast, very, very hectic, like something out of a movie," Albom said. "But what's important to remember isn't just that we got out, it's that there's so many people there who are still there – Americans, Canadians who are not getting the help that they need, particularly from their governments."

Albom went on to say it's important to remember that "our kids" - referring to the children in the orphanage - and other Haitians don't have the option to get out.

Albom has spearheaded the Have Faith Haiti Mission & Orphanage project, recognizing the need months after the devastating earthquake in 2010 that killed at least 100,000 people and severely damaged the country's infrastructure.
