FIFA World Cup Halftime Show Somehow Gave Michigan a Twin and Added a Sixth Great Lake

The global World Cup craze wrapped up Sunday with the championship match and the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final halftime show. The performance had been hyped for months, but as soon as it started, some eagle-eyed Michiganders spotted something that completely stole the spotlight.

The opening graphics began in space before zooming toward Earth and eventually East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the final was being played. But as the animation got closer to the United States, something looked... off.

It appeared there were two Michigans on the map and six Great Lakes instead of five.

When you watch the video again, it's pretty clear this wasn't cloud cover or a quick visual glitch. It actually looks like someone accidentally duplicated part of Michigan and created an extra Great Lake. See for yourself in the video below.

Once people got past the map that somehow gave us two Michigans and six Great Lakes, the halftime show itself was impossible to ignore. As the first halftime performance in World Cup Final history, FIFA clearly wasn't interested in keeping things simple.

The Work Cup Halftime Show Was Every Bit as Over-the-Top as Expected

In just 11½ minutes, the show packed in what felt like an entire music festival. Madonna opened with a flashy entrance alongside Brazilian soccer legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho before conductor Gustavo Dudamel led a full orchestra through an epic version of Seven Nation Army, complete with flags, colorful visuals, and yes... even the Muppets.

BTS brought plenty of energy with "Dynamite," Justin Bieber slowed things down with an acoustic performance, and Shakira teamed up with Burna Boy for the official World Cup anthem in what was arguably the biggest crowd-pleasing moment of the night.

FIFA's First-Ever World Cup Halftime Show Finale Was Packed With Stars

The finale featured Coldplay's Chris Martin, the PS22 Chorus, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, fireworks, and a giant "LOVE" display stretching across the field.

Whether you loved it or thought it was completely over-the-top, nobody can accuse FIFA of playing it safe with its first-ever World Cup Final halftime show. They can, however, accuse whoever designed that opening animation of needing a refresher on U.S. geography.
