Popular Department Store Chain Closing 150 Locations – Any in MI?
It's unfortunate to see the number of big chain stores and restaurants making closure announcements over the past several years. In most cases, these closures are tied to underperforming stores and restaurants.
In 2022, we told you that Bed, Bath & Beyond was closing its remaining 360 stores. Earlier this week, Outback Steakhouse announced the closure of 41 locations. These are just a couple of examples of major companies downsizing or going out of business altogether.
Well, now it looks like Macy's is next to announce major closures. According to CNN, the company is closing 150 underperforming stores, with 50 of those closures happening this year.
Is Macy's Going Out of Business Nationwide?
While Macy's is planning to close 50 stores by the end of 2024 and the other 100 over the next few years, the company isn't going away. It's really more of a restructuring plan than the company going out of business. By 2026, only 350 Macy’s stores will remain.
None of this should come as a shock since Macy's has already closed nearly 300 stores in the past nine years.
Moving forward the company will focus more on luxury brands.

Is Macy's Closing Any of Its Stores in Michigan?
It's unclear at the moment what stores the company will close. With the plan to close underperforming stores, we would have to imagine that some of those stores will be in Michigan.
It wouldn't surprise me if Macy's in the Genesee Valley Center in Flint Township was to close. It seems like many businesses in that area have been struggling for some time now.
I'm sure we'll hear something in the coming weeks or months.
