After receiving the go-ahead from Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the high school football season is back.

After a new Executive Order this week, Governor Whitmer gave fall sports the go-ahead to play. Soon after that, the Michigan High School Athletic Association took a vote and made a plan to restart the season. Instead of waiting until spring, high school football players will be back on the field on Tuesday.

As I have quite a few friends with high school football players, this is great news. They are all happy they get to return to the field and here is how the shortened season will look.

  • Starting Tuesday, September 8th, the re-start of practice will begin and teams will return to the field with only helmets and shoulder pads.
  • Thursday, September 10th, teams will be allowed to practice with full pads on.
  • Friday, September 18th, games will begin. The season has been shortened from nine games to six and most teams will begin with their week four opponents from the original schedule.
  • Friday, October 30th, playoffs are set to being. Per the Michigan High School Athletics Association, all teams will automatically qualify for the playoffs (eight-player and 11-player teams.)
  • State Finals:
    • Eight-Player - November 27th and 28th
    • Eleven-Player - December 4th and 5th

When it comes to cheerleaders and bands, both would be allowed if that particular region is in Phase 5. If that region is only in Phase 4, only cheerleaders will be allowed.

Personally, I am very happy to see this happening. Many of the high school players that I know were absolutely crushed when their season was postponed until the spring. Seeing their spirits lifted and watching their depression and stress wash away has made me so happy!
