Drunk driving is a grave and dangerous offense that poses a serious risk to everyone on the road. It endangers lives and can have devastating consequences. This is why it's crucial for law enforcement to use every opportunity to remind the public of the severe risks associated with driving under the influence.

With that in mind, the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office recently shared a video on their Facebook page that might initially come across as somewhat amusing. The footage brought to mind a scene from 'The Office' where Michael Scott drives his car into a lake because his GPS directed him to do so.

However, it’s important to recognize that the real-life context of this video is anything but a joke.

As silly as the video the sheriff's department posted may seem, they coupled it with a very serious message:

The Leelanau County Sheriff's Office would like to remind drivers that paying full attention to the road as you drive is of the utmost importance. Speed, alcohol and drug use are not things that usually end well when you are behind the wheel.

The incident occurred on August 16th in the Village of Omena, Leelanau Township. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated and has been booked into jail. The case has been referred to the Leelanau County Prosecutor for further review.

So, fellow Michiganders, enjoy your last few weeks of summer— but be smarter than the person behind the wheel of this truck. Let’s all commit to driving safely and responsibly. If you’ve been drinking, find a safe ride home.
