Massive 100 Car Pile Up Shuts Down Michigan Highway
It was a brutal commute to work for many Michiganders Monday morning, and for some, it turned into hours stuck on the highway.
Drone footage shows just how ugly things got on I-196 in western Michigan after a burst of lake effect snow turned the road into chaos. Southeast of Grand Rapids, vehicles started piling up fast, and once it began, there was no stopping it.
Cars, SUVs, and a whole lot of semi trucks ended up tangled together in a massive chain reaction crash. Early estimates were all over the place, but officials later confirmed dozens of semis were involved, along with plenty of regular passenger vehicles. Somehow, and this is the part that really matters, injuries were reported as minor, and no one was killed.
According to Time Now News, the stretch between Zeeland and Hudsonville was shut down for hours. Some drivers were stranded in their vehicles and told to stay put while emergency crews worked through the wreckage.
Eventually, buses were brought in to get people off the highway and somewhere warm. Temperatures were in the teens, and being stuck in a car that wouldn’t run or even turn on is no joke.
A winter storm with heavy blowing snow, strong winds, freezing temps, and near-zero visibility created the perfect storm for something like this to happen.
