Michigan has made the list of the top five states for affordable homes.

If you have been attempting to buy a home lately in the Great Lakes State, you may or may not agree. Opinions on 'affordable' are sure to differ.

Michigan did land at number five on the list, so there are four other states in the U.S., where your money is likely to go further.

What criteria make Michigan a state to purchase an affordable home? Good question. According to the New York Post, via Redfin, Michigan has a median home price of $248,000. Does that sound affordable to you?

There are lower-priced homes in Michigan, but homes over $200,000 do seem high to be on a list of affordable homes. However, I am not in the market, and certainly have no real estate expertise.

What states, other than Michgian, are on the list of top 5 states for affordable homes?

The list of the top five states for affordable homes with a median home price is as follows,

  1. Iowa ($227,500)
  2. Ohio ($231,400)
  3. Oklahoma ($236,700)
  4. West Virginia ($243,100)
  5. Michigan ($248,000)

Have you considered leaving Michigan to live where housing is less expensive? Or perhaps you have moved already for that very reason.

Maybe the most expensive thing you are buying these days is eggs.

If you are in the market for a home in Michigan, find one with a chicken coop.
