Looks like many of us will start to regain some room in the garage this month.

Michiganders are about to get some extra money in their pocket. Starting June 15th we will be able to cash in on the small fortune that we have all been sitting on since the start of all of this craziness. All those deposit bottles we've been forced to shove in the garage will soon be gone.

The Michigan Department of Treasury has begun the reestablishment of the Michigan Deposit Bottle Return Program. Many retailers are being told to reopen the machines for customers. Those retailers include reverse vending machines in the front of the store or in a separate area.

Retailers participating can also follow some or all of the following:

  • Limit the number of returns to $25 per person per day.
  • Establish special or limited hours for returns.
  • Periodically close stations for cleaning.
  • and more.

Retails must also limit the number of returns to 140% of their average weekly collection volume from April to May of 2019. Bottle deposit returns have been on hold since March 23, 2020.

What are you going to spend the money from your deposits on? My friends and I have decided to pool together all of our bottle money to have a party or go on a trip. Personally, if the limit is $25, I will have to make at least three trips to return all of mine.

Let's be honest though. Be patient with one another as this all gets going. We all can't return all of our bottles at once. Please know this will take a while to get done.
