Spring break can be the perfect time for Michigan families to get away and enjoy a little fun in the sun. While it's meant to be a break from the chaos life can sometimes throw at us, there are some things you should and should not do to protect yourself and your family.

What is the first thing most people do when they travel? While sitting at the airport, they check in on Facebook and show everyone exactly where they're going. We're all guilty of this, myself included. However, it's not the best thing to do because you're essentially telling everyone that you're not going to be home for a few days. This is an open invitation to thieves who will quickly take advantage of the situation.

Don't Share Vacation Photos on Social Media

Experts say that you should never post on social media that you're leaving town. You should also wait to post photos of your trip until you're back home. I know, it's hard to resist the temptation of sharing your vacation moments with others but it's the best way to avoid someone breaking into your home.

If you have people house-sitting for you, it's a different story. Thank whoever is staying at your place on social media so it's apparent someone is there.

A few things you should do while on vacation is bring cash and make a copy of your credit cards just in case they get stolen. Also, carry important phone numbers with you because I can guarantee, you don't have them memorized. I would also suggest using the safe in your hotel room or rental to secure personal and important items.
